Ashton Pipes - made in England by
Bill Ashton-Taylor
Bill Taylor must be one of the best known - and best loved - pipemakers in the world.
He started his career as an apprentice with Dunhill as a teenager and rose to
the position of Quality Control Manager before leaving to start his own
pipemaking
business in 1984. Ashton pipes were an instant success.
The rest, as they say, is history. The Ashton name is now revered by pipesmokers
all around the world.
Ashton pipes are oil-cured. This process - which Bill has patented - involves
repeatedly heating each individual bowl to open the grain, then soaking it in a secret
mixture of precious oils, which replace the sour-tasting moisture which is naturally
present in briar. This not only shortens the "breaking in" period, it
dramatically reduces the chances of burn-out, cracking, etc., which are so often caused by
moisture remaining in imperfectly cured briar.
Most of Bill's pipes now have a mouthpiece made from "Ashtonite", a specially
developed material which combines many of the advantages of both acrylic and vulcanite.
It keeps its polish and does not discolour, yet it not so hard on the teeth, nor so
brittle, as Acrylic.
Bill and I have been close friends for many years. He was kind enough to give me
much encouragement and advice when I started this business - even though I was then a
competitor. I am therefore delighted that I am now able to work in collaboration
with Bill, in bringing you these pipes.

Weight: 54g / 1.8 ounces
Tobacco Chamber:
1.8" x 0.85" dia. (44mm x 21mm dia.)
A larger Lovat. The
finish is the usual red-black favoured by Ashton - the gold highlights are
the result of my using a tungsten lamp to show the pattern of the grain.
